eyes: Ruki's eyes are a chocolate brown color at times while most often they are a deep brown. They're not really his most alluring feature.
hair: Wispy hair falls over the right side of his face and is layered and textured to a great extent, and parted on the left though normally one can’t see the part in his hair. Ruki will also often flip it out on either side, so it’s easy to tell he’s a true fan of hair products, especially hairspray. The length of his hair varies, reaching to his cheekbones then becoming longer in length as you reach his back. At its longest point, Ruki’s hair reaches almost to his shoulders.
distinguishing features: Ruki's lean face and lanky body type make him stand out, as well as the form of his mouth. Ruki has a habit of puckering his lips slightly so that he has a constant sort of pout (to cover his dimples).
tattoos and piercings: Ruki has two piercings in his left ear.
personal style: Ruki dresses to his own style, taking it's form as visual kei. He keeps his hair funky and his clothes cool and often one of a kind due to the modifications he applies or sews in himself. He takes pride in wearing clothes that can be considered formal as well as casual. He's a fan of big belt buckles and glitter, but when he's lazy a dress shirt and jeans will do just fine for him.
appearance: When one first sees Ruki (on a day that he isn’t lazy, of course), he’s quite a striking figure to behold. His wispy hair falls over the right side of his face and is layered and textured to a great extent, and parted on the left though normally one can’t see the part in his hair. Ruki will also often flip it out on either side, so it’s easy to tell he’s a true fan of hair products, especially hairspray. The length of his hair varies, reaching to his cheekbones then becoming longer in length as you reach his back. At its longest point, Ruki’s hair reaches almost to his shoulders, and therefore covers the two piercings he’s placed (himself, at that) in his left ear most of the time, though as he moves a glimpse of a silver stud or ring may be seen before being covered once again.
But Ruki’s sometimes crazy hair isn’t what truly makes him stand out. Perhaps it’s the often flamboyant or just otherwise really different clothes he’ll wear, or the fact that he wears makeup a lot of the time, but either way he’s sure to catch your eye. Black eye shadow and eyeliner enhance the features of his almond-shaped eyes, whether he’s giving them a more catlike shape or wings; his carefully shaped and plucked eyebrows give him an almost quizzical or displeased expression depending on the angle of his face. Foundation and makeup base pale his face and even out the tone to an almost matte version of his own skin colour, and he’s come into the habit of almost pursing his lips to hide the two ever-present dimples in his cheeks, and this also further thins his already thin face. Combined with the makeup, the strange outfits, delicate facial features, and his lean figure, Ruki is often mistaken for a girl at first glance.
Modified blazers, dress shirts, and pants make up Ruki’s wardrobe, as well as an assortment of knickknacks and chains that he may turn into various sorts of jewellery when the moment strikes him. Ruki modifies most of everything he purchases, whether he puts silver thread through, adds his own more interesting buttons, or just cuts them up and makes them shorter or longer by adding pieces of material to form interesting patterns or just to add a bit of flair to something that he may otherwise consider boring. Ruki takes special interest in bracelets, liking silver items best, and he will often dress his wrists and fingers according to whatever eye-catching piece of neck jewellery he’s chosen for the day. When it comes to his jewellery choices, one should only think silver, chains, chunky, or detailed, and it’s likely it’ll suit his taste at one point or another. Ruki usually coordinates everything he wears, often making it look as though he’s taken apart a nice suit and made it more casual. And if it has extensive detailing that you haven’t seen yourself, it’s likely that he added it himself. It’s no doubt that he appreciates small and extravagant details, and that’s what makes him so truly interesting to look at.
However, it should be noted that Ruki isn’t always this flamboyant, and that when he’s having one of his lazy days he looks quite different. Ruki actually wears contacts a lot of the time, and on these days he’s much more likely to wear his rimmed glasses. His hair is less voluminous than one may think, and tousled as if he just rolled out of bed and didn’t bother to brush it (which is probably the case). He’s likely to just throw on a simple dress shirt and jeans… likely whatever he happened to see the second he started looking for something to wear. And during these phases, the general public is probably lucky he went into that much effort at all. If he felt he could, Ruki would just as happily wear whatever he happened to sleep in.

overall personality:
Ruki is easily a very punctilious sort of person and always pays attention to details before anything else. He likes things to by symmetrical if that’s how they should be; or just intricate, neat patterns in anything that isn’t necessarily meant to be well-balanced. While he isn’t the sort who cares if everything is in perfect place in regards to everyday items and such, he is careful about anything remotely decorative. If you were to enter Ruki’s room, one would see a neatly made bed, and posters and pictures put up perfectly and straight adorning the room, and while they may look as though they were just normally placed posters Ruki would have sat there for hours, debating where to place things, and re-arranging every possible decoration in his room down to the last sculpture just to make sure it all looked interesting and as if it were meant to be there the entire time, even while he has random shirts thrown over his desk chair and sewing needles sticking out of the carpet just waiting to be stepped on.
Ruki, slight obsessive-compulsive tendencies aside, is overall a pretty laid-back sort of person and easy to communicate with. He enjoys speaking to others, if only for the purpose of implicating parts of their style into his future designs, or for mere inspiration, though this is only if he dislikes someone as he will almost never push anyone away. And for this reason it can be agreed that he is rather imperturbable, or - for a better word - stoic. Ruki can put up with any sort of annoyance without seeming bothered at all, and is probably one of the most patient people someone could ever hope to meet. In fact, Ruki can be so patient that his patience is what can get on someone’s nerves; it has been suggested that Ruki just may have an uncanny ability to ignore just about anything. His patience is often mistaken for plain indifference, and he’s had a fair few relationships end on a negative basis because of this. While fights and such things do bother Ruki like it would any normal person, his natural optimism often prevents him from feeling hurt too deeply and he tends to carry on with things in a manner that makes him appear completely unscathed. He believes that everything will right itself when the proper moment arrives, and that belief also enables his own laziness when he really doesn’t feel like doing anything, and during these times Ruki’s appearance will also be much more conventional.
While he appears outwardly social in most ways, he also has the ability to zone out at random intervals, even though he doesn’t mean to. This is a sign that Ruki doesn’t have much focus for anything that doesn’t interest him, and that dreamy expression he has when he’s off in his own little world really doesn’t capture that he’s merely thinking of what he’s going to do the next day or what his workload is like for when he comes home. Ruki makes for a good conversationalist when it interests him, but as far as something that he finds boring, Ruki’s attention span doesn’t seem to exist.
Having a large amount of pride and also being stubborn, he is never the first one to apologize. In fact, even if someone were to apologize to him in regards to something their both at fault for it’s likely they won’t receive the same favour. The fact that he is also a fair bit selfish doesn’t help anything, so he’s often unable to see the needs of those around him. Ruki wants to be the center of attention and have whatever he wants as soon as the desire strikes him, but it will be a while - if at all - before he offers anything to anyone else unless it suits him. Though it must be said that on some days Ruki is much more giving than others, and if he does happen to get well attached to someone (he’s never been particularly close to anyone) he’ll probably throw as much as he can into the relationship, learning as he goes along. So while he does act selfish and basically is, he has the ability to be selfless if he feels it to be properly warranted. It should not be assumed that Ruki is afraid of closeness, as he has no qualms with the concept.
Ruki is essentially pretty intelligent, though he usually just doesn’t apply himself. Some people think he’s a bit vain because he puts so much effort into his appearance much of the time and not much effort into anything else, but the fact that he has a poor attention span and that he often subconsciously uses his optimism as an excuse to do no work, as well as the add-on that he’s lazy makes so that most things that Ruki does are not much above mediocre if he lacks a passion for them. Not many spectacular things can be expected of Ruki’s grades, though he does show quite the talent for working hard under pressure.

Kazuo is a forty-five year old management consultant who works for a large retail department store chain. While he appears to be slightly over-bearing, he is generally calm and has an uncanny ability to associate with just about anyone in a pleasant manner though he has a gruff way of speaking. Ruki is relatively close to his father, though he is well aware that Kazuo thinks he should be spending his time on something more worthwhile than altering clothing.
Etsuko Okamura – Mother
Etsuko was born in Japan and moved to America when she was eight years old. She is now thirty-eight, and still has a very slight accent that is only noticeable if one listens closely. Etsuko’s own parents, however, still have an accent that is more on the heavier side. She’s a harsher woman with high expectations for Ruki, is fiercely intelligent, and works as an accountant.
Reiko Miyuki Okamura – Sister (deceased)
Four years younger than himself, Ruki was just getting to that age where he was beginning to become closer to his sister. Because of that initial lack of closeness, Ruki wasn’t as bothered as he could have been by her death. She was killed when the bus she was riding on was rear-ended hard when she was sitting in the very back of the bus. Ruki was thirteen when she died.

nationality: Japanese
birthplace: Trenton, New Jersey
history: Born and raised in the United States, Ruki lived in New Jersey before moving to New York at the age of six so that his family could be closer to his grandparents (father’s side). His little sister was only two years old at the time, and Ruki doesn’t really remember much about New Jersey to miss it. At that time, Ruki had been a quiet, timid boy so he had no friends to complain about moving away from either. The move ended up being rather uneventful, with very little reluctance from any of the family members. There was no cultural clash from his grandparents as they, too, were born and raised in the United States, so it’s quite clear that Ruki’s family is American aside from his mother and her family. Ruki, however, is unfamiliar with his mother’s own family as her parents went back to Japan when his mother finished high school, and the others hadn’t made the move in the first place.
Ruki only began to come into his own at around eight years old, as this was the time he began to break out of his shy shell and step forward to begin experimenting with things that seemed to be of interest to him. At school he never really made friends with any particular group, and rather had a tendency to bounce from person to person rather than associating with anyone for too long, as once he began to become social everything seemed too interesting to him to focus on any one thing. So while he was outgoing at school and in activities outside of school, he never brought anyone home, and his teachers couldn’t understand why his parents expressed such worry about his social development when Ruki seemed aptly tuned to it. This trend continued until close to junior high, when having a certain group of friends seemed more important than having many acquaintances, and at this point Ruki’s ever slipping grades began to balance out when he seemed to withdraw once again from any prospect of socializing. At this point, he became relatively familiar with one of his teachers, and upon seeing her sewing during a lunch break he too became interested, and that was where his interest in detailing and clothing modification derived from. He soon began to join his teacher at lunch, learning from her what he could before attempting to sew any large project on his own.
In the eighth grade, Ruki began his climb to dressing in the way he does now, and with this he became confident once again and finally began to associate in a way that was less bouncy and a bit more grounded, though he usually fluttered from one group or another every now and then, though sticking within two groups of friends. Though closer to them than his previous friends, the relationships weren’t quite well-developed enough to help him cope with his first emotional jolt - the death of his sister, an event he never quite knew how to handle. Killed on the bus on the way back from her school, a cement truck had collided with the bus on the highway after the bus driver had slammed the breaks to avoid running into an accident that had happened just ahead of them. The cement truck had been a bit closer to the bus than it should have, and didn’t have enough time to come to such a quick stop. Having been sitting in the very back of the bus, the small girl was killed along with a few other children while those in the front remained virtually unharmed. And for this reason, while he isn’t aware of his own habit, Ruki will never go too near the back of a bus. Ruki didn’t cry at first, as even though he was thirteen at the time it was also the first time he’d experienced death, having never owned any pets before and having a very healthy family. His father was insistent that Ruki assist with the funeral plans in small ways out of respect to Reiko, and this lead Ruki into the habit of keeping busy and became his way of dealing with the death. Ruki’s intense level of focus on small details is his unconscious way of handling things that bother him.
After the death of her daughter, Ruki’s mother became much more harsh on Ruki, but out of her own love and worry for him. It almost seems that because she now has only one child, it’s even more crucial for him to succeed in life and go above and beyond her own high expectations. However, Ruki’s laid-back and often lazy attitude prevents him from trying too hard in many things, and often times his grades are little better than mediocre, so he is often under pressure from her though he himself isn’t aware of the stress she puts on him. While he doesn’t intentionally disappoint, Ruki handles things differently than most, and all the stress does is make him focus more on the things he does enjoy rather than on his schooling, being that he lacks any sort of direction in that area due to not quite knowing what he wants to do once he leaves school. Some turmoil at home due to Ruki’s perceived inability to put effort into anything regarding school caused him to have difficulties getting into his junior year, but his work ethic during Summer school proves that there may be hope for him yet.

roleplay sample:
Raito closed his eyes for a moment, squinting them when he did so, shaking his head in the process. Why did she act so feeble? While he himself wasn’t overly pleased with the situation, he felt it would have been politeness on her part to assist him with the makings of something bordering on a conversation. It was really the least she could do, though he was also quite aware that it wasn’t her fault he’d been sent to get her. Things just happened to work out that way.
Why is the current president in his position if he’s unable to keep things properly organized? Raito grumbled to himself. The more he thought about it, the more he felt that the current president was unworthy. He himself didn’t desire for the position, and just being a member was taking up more time than he would have liked. Still, it was needed in order to appear as though everything was just the way it had been before. While he hadn’t completely wanted to join the council upon entering university, he felt that it was what he would have done had he not gained the Death Note. And a student of such quality as he should be an active, contributing member to the university as well as holding the same grade point average. And the more Raito thought about it, the more his life seemed to have become a juggling act; though he was hardly surprised at his own ability to hold everything together.
After all, that’s why fate had made him the god of the New World. All he had to do was fit the pieces together.
So when Chi apologized, Raito said nothing and merely nodded in answer after he let his exasperation slip, though that didn’t matter. It could have also been just as much of a sign of tiredness, and he’d use that to his defence if anything was brought up. Luckily, she didn’t seem to notice and after asking about the directions, he was pleased when she finally spoke something more of a full sentence.
Yet again, however, she gave him a more apologetic sort of reply, and he was now no longer certain why she was so sheepish. Can’t remember where anything is half the time? he repeated, I wouldn’t be surprised, his thoughts working into a hidden sneer, and he caught himself before he could say anything snide to her. No sense stirring anything up. Instead, he let her take the piece of paper he’d offered to her, and relaxed his posture slightly while he waited for her to read it. He slipped both hands into his pocket as he stood in the hallway with her, and just as he was able to calm himself, his heart felt as though it had skipped a beat and he almost stopped breathing as he watched another piece of paper fall from the folded one.
Eyes widening at the horror of what could be taking place, he managed to keep his body at ease, and with a slightly shaky arm he scoured the pocket he’d pulled the sheet from. In his haste to get to the damned meeting, he’d shoved the note with the room number into the wrong pocket. The small piece of the Death Note which he’d kept there neatly so that the paper lines wouldn’t show through his pants had gotten trapped within the folds of the other paper. And as the lined sheet fell to the floor, it was all he could do not to dive for it in haste.
And now he was wondering why he hadn’t done just that. A little lack of composure could have saved him a lot more trouble.
Still struggling to maintain the composure that meant so much to him, he barely let his breathing increase as he watched her pick it up. This was it. And finally, he let his eyes dart to the shinigami, not daring to make a move until he was absolutely certain, hoping against hope, that it was the piece of the Death Note. Why he’d kept it there for so long was beyond him, and a stupid risk at that. He’d need to find a better place to put it from now on, and at that thought he lifted his arm to scratch the back of his head, eyes catching the watch. Yeah… that would work.
Looking at Ryuk, he hoped the death god would notice that he was staring at him, but Raito made certain he moved his head subtly, and not all the way so that it would appear to be a direct stare. Raito needed to figure something out quick while a million ideas were running through his head. He could act as if he didn’t see Ryuk, though that likely wouldn’t work well, or he could even pretend to be just as shocked as Chi. But doing the latter could result in her going around the university, telling people about the strange creature she’d seen in the hall with him. Raito didn’t even want to consider what that could do to him. He was left with very few options, and the best one that he could see was acknowledging Ryuk’s existence and remaining calm. And he had her name. If he needed to, he’d concoct a way to kill her. And from the sound of the shrill scream that reached his ears, he was thinking that was exactly what he had to do.
Raito lost all manner of politeness now, narrowing his eyes and allowing a hard look to come to them. “Quiet,” he whispered, darting around the hallway with his eyes. No one seemed to have heard it, and if they had they hadn’t come down their direction to investigate, and thankfully no one was in the hall. Raito did not want to be seen with a girl who was pressed up against a wall in fear while he stood there with an expression he knew wasn’t all that characteristic of how he appeared to members of the university. “Act nonchalant. He’s been here the entire time, and I can assure you that he won’t hurt you,” he said lamely. Much as I’d like to… he added to himself.
Deciding to ignore the fact that he had clearly made a very stupid mistake and just deal with it now, Raito sighed, wondering exactly how he was going to do that. Already he was going through plans in his mind, most of them on when and how he could kill her if he felt it needed to come to that. But he’d have to get inside her head first to see just how much of a risk keeping her around was going to be.
