take a breath of air before you faint
take a breath of air before you faint
height: 5’3
weight: 101
build slender, petite
eyes: Large yet subtle, Diann’s eyes are dark brown color but often appear dark enough to be black, nearly matching her hair color. Dee’s eyes often are a reflection of her own soul, giving a gateway into her feelings when often times it’s impossible to see her emotions otherwise. Most people don’t usually pick up on the beauty of Diann’s eyes until they take the time to gaze into them and realize their subtleness in beauty.
hair: Dee possesses long, black hair (dyed that way, her hair is naturally dark brown) which is very soft and easy to work with. She prefers to wear it down, and only pulls her hair back when she feels she has to (such as when she’s dancing). She spends time to style her hair but doesn’t go overboard on it.
distinguishing features: her slender build, piercings, and tattoos.
tattoos and piercings: diann is pierced once on each lob, with both sides of her nosed pierced and also a right and left Monroe. However, she does not always wear rings in such piercings and in the past has had holes ceil up on her. She has multiple tattoos: a cupcake with writing on her wrist, a butterfly on her hip, and three tattoos on separate fingers being a heart, cupcake, and ribbon shapes.
personal style: Although sometimes she’ll conform into wearing the color pink or even “cute” clothes, Diann has never been down with dressing like the average prep. Some would define her style as “punk” or “edgy.” She favors the color black and usually wears it in all her outfits. She also often wears hoodies and t-shirts with large shoes. I think you’ll find her style is a great indicator of her personality.
appearance: Diann often gives off a reflective, secretive persona. And because she rarely smiles, with the exception of when she’s dancing, she can come across cold. Add her serious look to her rebellious style and she can appear either very intimidating or annoying to some girls, depending on who you’re talking to. Diann usually keeps a quick pace when she walks with the same seriousness in her steps. Another side of Diann comes out with she dances. When she’s on stage she can be sexy, shocked, surprised, angry, or bursting with joy. When she’s performing she’s not afraid to smile or display happiness. Her appearance on stage is anything the choreography calls for.

overall personality:
In her early years, Diann was a very talkative and outspoken girl who had many friends. If you would have guessed what she’d turn out to be like in high school just based off of her elementary school years, you’d probably assume she’d end up homecoming or prom queen or something along those lines. However, things happened in Diann’s life that sort of morphed her personality a little.
Some may call her selfish, some may call her vain, but it’s no lie that Diann takes care of herself. I suppose you could truthfully label her self-centered as she has learned to put herself first; that’s how she functions and survives. She’s ambitious and out there to get ahead. But don’t think that makes her a bad friend. Actually, Diann often goes out of her way to help friends in distress. She likes helping those loyal to her. She also hates it when people are rude and don’t return kindness. In fact, it’s one of her pit peeves; when people aren’t polite. And she’s sees no need to be inconsiderate to people who haven’t done any harm to her. So, she’ll often stick up for people who are being bullied and give strangers aid. Diann carries a strong sense of justice. To her, there is right, and then there is wrong. And she fully believes in the system of an eye for an eye. If you insult her, she’s going to give you a piece of her mind, or worse. She sticks up for herself. In fact, that is why she is often labeled as a mean girl and people are intimidated by her. And, in actuality, they are somewhat right. She can be very mean to those she has conflicts with. Enemies are enemies, and Diann isn’t bothered by being very cruel. She will stoop low to fight against those she has problems with, so try to stay on her good side.
Another aspect of Diann is her secrecy. She’s very quick to listen to a friend and give them advice, but she almost never turns to anyone else to get her own help. She deals with her problems independently and on her own. In fact, much of who she really is is hidden from the world. She finds it easier to be a friend, then to have a friend. And to give love, than to receive love. Throughout her life she has developed trust issues and has learned to rely on herself for help. She also tends to be a more serious person. She never really smiles unless dancing, and is particularly glum while at school.
Diann is often seen as rebellious, which is partly true. As hard-working as she is outside of school, while in her classes she rarely pays attention. Honestly, the only reason she comes to school is so that she can graduate, and the only reason she even does her homework is so that she can stay on the cheerleading squad and in the dance club. Sometimes she’ll ditch classes, if she can get away with it without being caught. Although serious and somewhat agonistic, Diann still is outspoken in the classroom as says a lot of what she thinks. Many preps find her bratty and annoying, but people don’t intimidate Diann. And due to her behavior, many classmates assume that she’s part of the party crowd, and perhaps even a dangerous influence to be around…
Diann also possess a great annoyance for preppy and dense girls, but has an even greater distaste for fake blondes. Ironically enough, with her grudge towards plastics, she loves cheerleading. And no one can deny, she’s actually very talented. Her extensive dance background makes for some great cheerleading moves, and she really knows how to work her body. But her talent doesn’t save her from some awkward moments with the cheerleading squad, whom most of which completely embody what she despises. Yes, there is clash. And, of course, Diann is seen as the vain villain.
But outside of school Diann can be a completely different person. She is constantly reminded by her past that she needs to be successful in life. She has goals. Big goals. She wants to attend a dance academy after high school, and is currently working hard to put together a portfolio. She works extremely hard at Carrey’s dance studio, and trains there even harder. She hopes one day to become a professional dancer. But she has a back up plan for if some terrible reason her dream of dance fails; she will enter culinary school and become a chef. So, occasionally, she practices cooking too. She’s even submitted recipes to cookbooks and has gotten them published. It is another way she makes money for herself. But even though her life with her uncles is comfortable…she still battles emotional anguish from her past. Her heart is plagued with hurt which she attempts to suppress. She puts her faith in the future, and her mother, and hopes for the best. Most people would be shocked to discover she goes to confession very often. Inside, she’s very emotionally vulnerable, but almost no one knows that. She puts on a convincing display that she is tough and independent, and who would really dare to question it?

nationality: American/Italian

history: Although both sides of her family have been living in America for almost a hundred years, Diann comes from a long line of pure Italian blood. And both her mother and father were raised in the traditional (and stereotypical) Italian way. Her father was the third son born to his parents, being the second youngest and one of six children. Her mother, Julia Loretta, was one of four children, being the oldest of the siblings. Both of Diann’s parents grew up in close proximity and called Brooklyn their home. They were also similar in the way they thought of their family and the culture they were apart of. Although both Charlie and Julia were proud of their families, they were more lenient towards the “modern” lifestyle. For example, Julia silently wasn’t sure if she really wanted to get married. She saw the commitment as a big step and didn’t want to make the mistake of ended up with someone forever that she didn’t get along with (in her family remarriage was something heavily looked down upon). Charlie also was a little different. His goals were more focused on money and career success, and although he wanted to get married, he only desired a small family. As the two entered adulthood, both were kind of in the same boat.
Julia possessed a great love of dancing. She went on to become a national ballroom dance contestant and later champion. Throughout her twenties, dance took up most of her life. Her parents worried that she would never settle down, but she ignored their quite concerns and just kept dancing. The years went by and she continued to dance professionally for a living. Charlie, on the other hand, took on the task of graduating from a university with honors and then attempted to conquer medical school. Eventually Charlie completed medical school, and his two years of learning after that, and Julia decided to “settle down” in her own way by opening a dance studio in Brooklyn. Julia collaborated with her good friend Carey, a fellow ballroom dancer, and the studio was much of a success. With Julia’s fierce reputation, the studio became a major center in the United States for ballroom dancers to train.
Around that time Charlie decided that it was about time for him to find someone to settle down with as well. Since the two were connected through the same network of friends, it didn’t take Charlie long to meet Julia. He was instantly drawn to her and the two shared a long, cute courtship. Julia was surprised to find her fears of marriage slowly fading and eventually the two were married. Both families gave a sigh of relief. Julia felt like the happiest girl in the world, and was sure that with time things would only get better. Sure enough, they did. She quickly discovered she was pregnant and gave birth to a healthy girl, who she named Diann, after a close friend.
Julia didn’t leave the studio to raise Diann, she brought her infant with her. Diann spent a lot of time in the arms of her mother’s close friends and family members while they watched her for her mom. But most importantly, she grew up in the studio, watching the best America’s ballroom dance had to offer. Diann inherited her mom’s love for dance and even as a little child it was noticeable she had a bright future in the art. She began taking jazz and ballet lessons when she was five.
When Diann started school she was one of those children that the teacher did well to remember. She was a talkative leader, who quickly made lots of friends and mostly did well in school, but occasionally got in to mischief. Most importantly, she was a trendsetter that wasn’t afraid to be herself. Charlie was proud of his strong-minded daughter and the popularity she held as a little girl. She continued to act this way for the next couple of years. Meanwhile, when she was seven, she quit ballet and took up tap dance instead. Because of her mom’s connections, she got to train with one of the world’s best tap instructors.
The next three years were peaceful. Diann’s love for dance grew, Julia’s dance studio continued to be successful, and Charlie was getting paid well for being a working surgeon. He was gone often, but that was okay, the Santoro family was content. But then everything changed. Julia was diagnosed with cancer. After that, Diann grew up very fast. She’d always had a very close bond with her mom and was very fearful of losing her. Although Julia was positive through the experience, she couldn’t fool her daughter. Things were rough. The kimo therapy was difficult to bear. She wasn’t the same energetic person she had once been. And although she still owned part of the studio, she couldn’t manage to teach there anymore. Diann sometimes still dropped by the place, but there was a solemnest that followed whenever she entered without her mother. Charlie had to work double time to help cover the medical bills. Things were just…different.
Diann really thought things weren’t going to get worse. But sure enough, they did. A year after her mom’s diagnosis Julia discovered that her husband was having an affair with one of his nurses he had been spending so much time with. She tried to keep the information a secret from her daughter, but Diann was smarter than she supposed and figured it out. It wasn’t long after that Charlie just decided to leave the situation all together. Diann was furious with her dad. She couldn’t believe what he’d done, but, of course, Charlie didn’t know that she was aware of his infidelity.
At first Charlie tried to argue that Julia was not healthy enough to provide for Diann in court to gain custody, but when it became clear that Diann did not want to live with her father under any circumstances, he dropped the argument. Julia kept fighting her illness with Diann right at her side. Diann was determined not to lose her mom. School became less of an importance when her mom was fighting a disease everyday. Much to her mother’s dismay, her grades started to decline.
Diann wondered if her father would ever introduce her to the woman he’d two-timed her mom with. She still had not told her dad that she knew about what he’d done. And after awhile, she was beginning to think that the other woman was gone for good and she’d never meet her. Then her father told her she was going to have another baby brother or sister. Once again, her heart was shattered. She soon met her dad’s “new” girlfriend. Her name was Gwen; tall, blonde, with blue eyes and a thin waist, even with being pregnant; the “perfect” woman. The whole meeting was a disaster. It didn’t help that Diann was nearly crying from the get go, but when they told her they were going to be married, Diann almost fell apart.
The Santoro family was ashamed of their son. Charlie’s older brother, Marco, didn’t even come to the wedding. Dianna tried to calm her nerves by giving Gwen a chance. This was a very difficult thing for her to do, especially with Gwen talking bad about her mom. And after that, Diann had to spend the weekends at his father’s new place in New Jersey. Honestly, she tried to her best of her ability to like it there, but she hated it. Whenever Gwen made a comment about her mom Diann defended her. That’s when things started going sour between Gwen and Diann. And soon enough, it was Diann Gwen was snubbing, not Julia. Meanwhile, all the stress was worsening Julia’s condition. Although she pretended to be happy around Diann, she was not improving. In time, Diann began to sense this, but she was in denial. She was not going to lose her mom…
When Diann was fourteen, her mother died.
There was no escaping the courts system. Straight after the funeral Diann packed her bags and head to her father’s “perfect” home in a suburb in New Jersey; you know, white picket fence and everything. Her dad was glad to see her there, but Gwen certainly was not. Diann took away the attention from Gwen’s two baby girls, Gabby and Mya. And even though her dad secretly loved Diann’s presence, whenever Gwen did something to her, he always sided with Gwen. That meant that Gwen nearly got away with anything along the lines of verbal, and sometimes physical, abuse. Diann hated New Jersey. She had no friends; no one to talk to. She was treated like a parasite; her dad had canceled all of her dance lessons. There were no dance studios even around in the first place! The girls at school treated her like crap, and she didn’t even have an outlet for all her frustration! So, she finally began rebelling. It really “pleased” Gwen when Diann showed up at the Mayor’s Christmas ball sporting five new piercings and a brand new tattoo. She began ditching school and not coming home until three in the morning. She made some connections in the party crowd and brought them home for her dad and Gwen to see. Finally, when her dad blew up at her, she ran away.
Charlie didn’t know what to do anymore. He was beginning to think the fight wasn’t worth it. His family, although still angry at Charlie, became aware of the situation and offered to help. Marco seemed particularly interested in helping “reform” the girl. Diann wasn’t really given a choice. When she was found, she was informed that she would be moving in with two of her uncles. Gwen was happy to see her go. Diann wasn’t really sure what to expect, little did she know, that Marco and Leo, her uncles taking her in, felt the same way.
Leo was in his mid fifties and had lost his entire family in a car accident when he was thirty eight; before Diann had even been born. He’d had a wife and two daughters before the accident, but even now, still wasn’t able to get past the grief. He threw himself into his work and never got over the loss. He’d never remarried, or really even dated for that matter. But he was a nice and rational man. And a great balance to his brother.
Marco was the oldest son in the family. He’d always had a passion for the law and had successfully made a career out of it. He’d been in several under cover operations, and had a big reputation down at headquarters. He was tough, strict, and to the point; no one laughed unless he was in on the joke. He once had a family, but his job got in the way and eventually his wife left him, but she never remarried. Although he sometimes saw his grown sons, that part of his past was buried within him.
At first things were awkward. But eventually, Diann and the two men warmed up to each another, and it turned out to be a wonderful fit. Of course, Marco still doesn’t understand Diann’s style, and is very blunt about it, but they’ve learned to accept one another. Leo and Marco’s polar opposite personalities each offer something different to Diann, and Diann herself has made a difference in her uncles’ lives. They don’t live in a very wealthy situation, but Diann has no complaints. She still gets what’s necessary and that’s what matters. She also has a job at her mom’s former studio, working for Carrey. The deal is if she cleans up after the dancers she too can also dance in the studio. She’s been attending eastside for about a year now, and has made quite a turn around in her behavior. She is eternally grateful that she can dance again, it being not only her passion but her love.

Callie glided down the halls of east high carrying a large history book in one hand, and balancing a heavy book bag on her opposite shoulder. Despite the fact that the freshmen was hauling around plenty of extra weight on her shoulder, she walked properly with her head erect. In fact, her usual feminine stance was just as noticeable as ever and her posture was near perfect; not that she knew. Although Callie was aware of her dainty stance, she did not know the extent of how it looked. She was hardly aware that her posture resembled that of a determined princess. As her heels clacked against the floor, they made an echo of noise that the James twin was quite used to. Of course, Callie did not always wear heels, as they were not the most practical choice of shoes, but she did when they flattered her outfit. Today was one of those days. And now, listening to the sound of her heels clack against the ground, she gained some odd sense of confidence. There was just something about the sound of her heels echoing throughout the halls that made her feel accomplished. She was grateful for this, as it was something to bring her spirits up.
Truth be told, she didn’t like wandering around Eastside alone. Still a new freshman, she was used to a far smaller school and still was having trouble figuring her way around Eastside. Plus being alone just made her feel…small, and slightly insecure. Callie, a shy sweetheart, had a hard time walking around the school alone without any friends to support her. She supposed that she was “one of those people” that had to band together to feel secure and confident; perhaps that was why, despite her shyness, she had a large group of friends. Part of her felt ashamed for being so insecure, but quickly told herself to stop being so self critical. So, she was nervous…she had a good reason to be. She was a freshman. High school was a new thing for her, but she told herself she’d quickly adapt and get used to it. And with all the homework high school was supposedly full of, it could be a good thing that she was alone during free period. Maybe she could make a pattern of it?
But she still missed company. She hadn’t seen her “older sisters”- June and Massie- all day. Jake was somewhere out of sight, Addie was surely off with her own friends. In fact, as Callie recalled, most of the day she hadn’t really interacted with any her own friends. Most had different classes or were always at different sides of the building whenever she could talk. The thought kind of depressed her, but she quickly shoved the thought out of her mind. She was trying to be optimistic, and pondering about the absence of friends was not something to keep one on a positive train of thought.
She glanced down at a sheet of paper within the hand not holding her history book. On the little sheet revealed a small map of the school, designed for freshmen in mind. She looked at an area marked, “Music Hall” and checked her position in comparison to the map. When free period first began, she had decided that she’d pay a visit to the music room. With no homework to complete at the current moment, she felt the next best option, with the exception of hanging out with friends, would be to go practice a song or two. Callie loved singing with immense passion; almost as much as she loved horseback riding. Funny how someone who had a hard time meeting new people wasn’t too afraid of performing in front of a crowd…
She turned a corner and her pace quickened, knowing that she was almost there. She felt her heartbeat quicken with excitement. Perhaps music was something she needed to take her mind of things and lighten up her mood. A few more seconds later and she saw the door in plain view…but her ears also sensed something : music; piano music. For a moment she stopped walking and her heart fell. Perhaps she wouldn’t get some practice in after all. She assumed that it was probably the music teacher practicing a song, or something along those lines, and surely didn’t want to be disturbed. But she quickly excused her negative thought and made more steps toward the door. If it was the teacher in there, she could simply ask where a few practice rooms were and Callie would be good to go.
But as she swung the door open, she learned quickly that her assumption had been wrong. She saw a boy, probably older by the looks of things, playing the piano. She barely had time to glance at him before she felt her face burn and dropped her history book out of surprise. It came down with a very large thump, which caused her skin to burn even further. She was sure she was visibly blushing. She bended over quickly and snatched her book up, desperate to save face. Ever since she started high school, embarrassing moments such as these seemed to be happening more frequently. It probably had to do with the fact that she was in a building full of strangers… She wanted to escape the situation as quickly as possible, but knew from experience that she had to keep cool if she didn’t want to embarrass herself even further. So instead of exiting without even looking at the boy, she looked at him for just a moment.
She caught on to the fact that he was emo…or punk…or sk8ter; whichever one. Callie had a hard time distinguishing between the three stereotypes simply based off appearance. Then again, she was very naïve when it came to stereotypes and was already aware of it…but that didn’t stop her from being intimidated. As much as she was timid around preppy strangers, she was even more afraid of strangers from other groups. But that didn’t stop her now from trying to pretend she was confident…which she was so far failing at.
She gave the boy a timid smile. “Hey…um d-do you know where the….” her mind went blank, trying to remember what she was about to ask. The nerves were killing her, and her cheeks darkened. Worst of all, she didn’t want to come off sounding like a dumb blonde, which was probably what the emo/punk/sk8ter boy already profiled her as.
Way to prove him right, Callie. she thought to herself.
