Oh how Max wished his muse would just appear some days! He had been sitting in the local cafe (which in his opinion was far better than Starbucks) attempting to write a one act play. He had finished the first half or so, but had run out of ideas. Ah well, time for another muffin, then! He stood and picked up his plate that once held a chocolate muffin before stepping into line.
"Why hello there." he heard a voice behind him. Max turned, raising an eyebrow at the sight of a college-age guy who had spoken to him. Oh no. Max really wasn't in the mood for flirting right now; not when he was so busy trying to retrieve his muse. "Let me buy you a drink." the guy said.
"That's quite alright. I already have one." he gestured to where his chair was, with a half-full coffee cup next to his notebook.
"Oh puh-leese? Don't make me beg you." he pouted. Max held back a grimace.
"Not to be rude, but I'm really not up for it right now." Max said. The guy gave him a concerned but sad look.
"Well ... at least give me your number." Oh good lord, Max thought
"Alright." Max smiled. He grabbed a business card from the counter and a pen and scribbled down a phone number. It wasn't his (he didn't know whose it was) but at least this way, he'd get the guy off his tail. He handed the card to the guy. "Call me." The guy smiled, nodded, and left.
Relieved, Max turned around and stepped up to the cashier, who had a shocked look on his face. "One chocolate muffin." he said simply, as if nothing had happened. The cashier was still in a trance, so Max placed his plate on the table. Clink!
"Oh. Of course." That had woken him up. The cashier grabbed a chocolate muffin from the display and placed it on the plate. Meanwhile, Max shuffled around the bills in his pocket and pulled out exact change. He handed it over and picked up the muffin before returning to his seat.
After sitting down, Max closed his notebook. He needed a break. His lack of muse, in combined with this encounter ... not a very good day so far. He picked up his muffin and bit into it. Mmm. At least something about today was good.
